EPSDT

EPSDT is an extremely valuable component of patient care for children under 21. Routine well visits can identify potential medical concerns and also help develop the important relationship between children, their caregivers and the primary care provider (PCP).

The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (DPW) requires that all Medical Assistance providers perform screenings in accordance with national standards recognized by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Please refer to the current EPSDT Periodicity Schedule for guidelines.

Several incentives related to EPSDT services are available. PCPs are urged to refer to our monthly member panel reports to identify your patient’s last EPSDT service and status.

Lead Testing

Lead testing is a key element of Pennsylvania’s EPSDT program and is especially vital in Philadelphia County, a designated "high blood lead area."

The EPSDT Periodicity Schedule requires that all children receive a minimum of two blood lead screenings at 9-11 months and 24 months, regardless of the individual child’s risk factors. Testing should be done at the next well child visit if missed at these times. A Pay for Performance incentive is available for lead testing on children under three years of age.

Providers must order and/or perform a blood draw or capillary stick for lead testing. You may use either participating lab provider: Quest Diagnostics at 800-825-7320, or Medtox Laboratories at 800-832-3244.

The Philadelphia Department of Health’s Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP) offers screening guidelines and other valuable information.
