| Intervention Workshops (Wellness & Nutrition)
|
Fitness – Activity levels can affect your life both in a negative and positive manner. This workshop describes the three forms of exercise: muscle strength, stretching/flexibility and aerobic (heart). The presentation demonstrates exercises that can be completed in the home without any special equipment. Each of the exercises emphasizes a different part of the body.
It also gives simple tips on how to fit a workout into your daily routine, and discusses safety tips and other recommendations that should be followed in any exercise program.
Food Pyramid – The food pyramid pictures what healthy eating should look like. This workshop explains what the food pyramid is and how to read it. It defines terms like servings and portions. It also discusses each of the food groups in the pyramid and its importance.
The workshop provides tips on what to look for when making a meal. Familiarity with the food pyramid can help assure that you eat a healthy variety of foods every day.
Healthy Start – We’ve all heard that “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.“ This workshop explains the physical and mental benefits of eating a meal in the morning, and the reasons why so many people skip it. It also provides information on what to look for in making a healthy breakfast, including tips for quick breakfasts that start your day off right.
Nutrition Labels/Counting Calories – The government requires nutrition labels on most packaged foods, but many people don’t take advantage of this information. This workshop explains what you can find on a nutrition label and how to put it to use.
The workshop points out common misunderstandings about this information, such as the difference between a serving size and the amount that you eat in one sitting. It also teaches how to use nutrition labels to track the calories you consume, and to change your diet as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Understanding Breast Cancer – Early detection usually means greater success in treating breast cancer. This presentation discusses early detection methods and available treatment options.
Heat Stress – Heat stress is a deadly but preventable health problem. This workshop discusses symptoms and the effects on the body. It additionally explains these other heat-related problems: heat cramps, exhaustion and stroke. The presentation also provides tips on avoiding heat problems by staying cool and keeping your body hydrated.
Prostate Cancer Awarenesss – Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in men of African American descent, and in all men over age 65. In this presentation, educators discuss early detection methods and available treatment options.

Computer
Classes – Computer literacy is vital today for both students and job seekers. It is also a time-saving tool for anyone interested in looking up information, especially on health-related issues. Our classes provide an introduction to the computer and some basic programs, and demonstrate how to access e-mail and the internet. Classes are held throughout our service area, including Health Partners’ bilingual community office at HACE Mall.
Confidence/Self-Esteem – High self-esteem is a key to both personal happiness and success. This workshop gives tips on how to improve your own confidence as well as your peers’. It discusses where self-esteem/confidence develops from and how it can shape lives and opportunities.
