Healthy Smiles Begin with Early Dental Checks
Philadelphia, PA – Last Friday, July 17, Health Partners, in partnership with St. Christopher’s Foundation for Children, hosted a pediatric dental day to promote healthy teeth for Health Partners’ youngest members. During the event, 46 children received full dental exams and the opportunity to learn how dental care and proper nutrition can help build strong, healthy teeth. The children also enjoyed face painting and a visit from Ms. Roo, Health Partners’ mascot.
“It’s important for parents to take their children to the dentist for regular check ups,” says Mary K Stom, MD, chief medical officer and senior vice president of healthcare management, Health Partners. “Regular dental visits will help parents to establish a healthy pattern of dental care for their children, which will also help them avoid dental issues later in life.”
Health Partners children who attended Chopper Check walked away with healthier teeth, brighter smiles and two (2) free movie tickets for their participation, courtesy of Health Partners. In addition, the 74 parents who participated in free blood pressure screenings for Health Partners members received a $15 Walmart gift card, also compliments of the health plan.
Children should visit the dentist at least once every six months for a cleaning and fluoride treatment. Below are some tips to help prevent tooth decay and keep tiny teeth strong and healthy between dental visits.
• Use a soft toothbrush and encourage your child to floss after each meal.
• Help younger children to brush their teeth until they get the hang of it and can brush teeth properly on their own.
• Check with your child’s dentist to find out if a fluoride supplement is needed.
• Feed your child plenty of fruits and vegetables, milk and other dairy products.
• Avoid giving your child sugary foods and drinks.
